Princess Petticoat
White charmeuse from the bust to the top of the flounces. Flounces of
tissue taffeta (poly, not silk) with bands of insertion lace. The flounces
are circular when held out all the way, but they are soft enough to
give just a little fullness when left to drape. Very comfortable to
wear, with wide straps that don't fall off your shoulders, and with
plenty of room at the hem to make walking easy.
Prince: $95.
You know this as a "full slip" (if you're old enough...most young girls
these days don't know what any kind of slip is!) In the late nineteenth
and early twentieth century, the word "slip" was not used to describe
this type of undergarment. Any kind of underskirt was called a petticoat.
If it had a bodice and shoulder straps, it was called a "princess petticoat."
They were generally slim in the waist area, but without a waist seam...just
like a princess style dress of today.
We make these in polyester charmeuse (the purists are gasping, we know,)
cotton batiste, and real silk if cost is not an issue. Remember, we
are making vintage style clothing that you can wear without worrying
about ruining it. Polyester looks like silk, feels like silk, is washable,
and is relatively inexpensive. By using synthetics in some of our garments,
we are able to let more women enjoy the fun of dressing up like Granny
did, without it costing too much. Our apologies to the purists who are
aghast at the thought of making vintage style clothing in anything but
natural fibers!
